First Cannabis Lounge Opens in Sunland Park, Marking a Milestone for Borderland Social Use

In a landmark step for Southern New Mexico’s cannabis culture, Sunland Park’s first state-licensed consumption lounge at Dispensary Near Me, quietly opened its doors this week. Located at 1290 McNutt Rd, the lounge offers adults 21 and older a legal, inviting venue to enjoy cannabis socially, just minutes from El Paso where public and private use remains prohibited.
For Borderland residents, the lounge is more than just a new business. It represents a shift toward normalized and community-focused cannabis use in a highly trafficked cross-border market.

From Strangers to Session Mates
Opening day showed what the space was designed to offer. While most guests arrived alone, few stayed that way for long. Visitors quickly formed new connections, comparing strains, passing grinders, and playfully debating whether tacos or burgers make the best post-session snack.
All cannabis must be purchased on-site, in accordance with New Mexico’s Cannabis Regulation Act. The in-house product menu reflects the operator’s well-established commitment to quality and compliance.

Award-Winning Operator Behind the Lounge
The lounge is operated by a dispensary group Dispensary Near Me, that earned the 2024 Essie Award for Best Dispensary with Four or More Locations. That recognition is reflected in the curated selection of flower, concentrates, edibles, and prerolls available on-site.
Guests without their own equipment can rent a range of accessories, including traditional glassware. During launch week, a $5 purchase includes a raffle entry to win a Puffco.

Community Events and Café Coming Soon
Food and beverage service is not yet available, though management confirmed a small café menu is in development. Upcoming programming includes themed community nights such as:
- Board game tournaments
- Sunday football viewings
- Classic movie screenings
Operating Hours:
- Thursday to Saturday: 7 AM to 2 AM
- Sunday to Wednesday: 7 AM to 12 AM
Soft Opening: Saturday, July 19
Grand Opening: Sometime in October
Licensing Remains a Major Hurdle
Although consumption lounges are permitted under New Mexico law, few have opened due to a slow and complex licensing process.
- Apogee Therapeutics, Field of Dreams, and Astro Buds have submitted city filings indicating interest in future lounges.
- Pecos Valley Production's Sunland Park location, now acquired by Score 420, completed a lounge buildout but has not yet received final state approval.
This Sunland Park opening is the first successful launch in the area, marking a significant moment in the evolution of cannabis access.
Why It Matters to El Paso and the Borderland
With Texas maintaining strict cannabis laws, thousands of El Paso residents regularly cross into New Mexico for access. Until now, legal use was restricted to private property. This new lounge allows for social use in a regulated setting, something that remains unavailable across the state line.
While the opening was intentionally low-key, its implications are far-reaching. For a region divided by policy but united by culture, this venue offers a rare place to gather, relax, and consume legally.
